Despite having documentary interest, these pictures are intended as personal statements. Many were taken out of season, or before or after hours, to create an ambiguous world in which outmoded places and buildings are presented with humour and a sense of melancholy.
Sea and dramatic skies feature regularly, not only to heighten the pictorial aspect but also to provide symbolic contrast between subject and background. Attention has also been given to the deployment of light which serves to transform scenes and add an extra decorative effect.
